Reminders and Important Information

REMINDER... our first payment is due May 1st which is this Friday. The $200.00 dollars needs to be paid to the Jordan High School main office. Be sure to tell the office that this payment is for the 2009-2010 season, and to have them put a copy of the receipt in my box. This is your down payment for your uniforms and our fittings our next week! If this isn't paid I will be unable to order your uniform.

We will be having a practice Wednesday, May 6th 7-9pm. This will be a stunting practice preparing us for our safety clinic the following day. We will be practicing at Life Centre Athletic Club which is located at 9844 South, 1300 East in Sandy (right next to Alta View Hospital).

We are no longer participating in the Race for the Cure, so enjoy sleeping in on that Saturday!

Cheerleading Constitution

Purpose of Organization
The purpose of Jordan High School’s Cheerleading program is to promote school spirit and morale among all athletes, students, and faculty, and to promote good relations between the school and community. The program will provide members an opportunity to grow, lead, and foster an application of life skills including development as responsible individuals and leaders. As an elite organization at Jordan High, students are viewed as role models. Therefore, it is very important for individuals to uphold good standards and use their talents to promote spirit and pride in their school.

Membership Qualifications and Responsibilities
  • Participation
    A Cheerleader must not have any other obligations that will conflict with games, practices, assemblies, fundraising events and competition. Cheerleader’s participation must take precedence over all outside jobs and other school activities.
  • GPA
    Squad members must maintain a 3.0 GPA every quarter during the school year. Failure to maintain will result in probation through the following quarter. If a cheerleader is on probation twice in a season they will be removed from the squad. Power grade checks will occur every other week.
  • Full Year Fulfillment
    Once selected as a Jordan High Cheerleader, squad members may NOT quit. It is assumed that students selected will fulfill the duties and commitments for the entire year.
  • Standards
    High standards must be upheld by squad members. As a role model, each cheerleader will be expected to conduct herself in a respectful manner. Absolutely NO drinking, smoking, vandalism, fighting, and use and of illegal drugs are allowed. Involvement in such activities will result in immediate dismissal.
  • Physical Requirements
    Cheerleading is a physically demanding sport and requires individuals to be in good health and top physical condition.
  • Additional Requirements
    Squad members will be asked to make posters for school Activities Squad members may be asked to provide squad treats, plan Assemblies, assist in fundraising events, etc.

Attendance Requirements
Participation in cheerleading requires a vast amount of time and commitment by members. It is crucial for individuals to attend all practices and events in order to learn new material, work as a team to perfect and perform.

Cheerleaders will be expected to attend the following:

  • Summer practices will be held Monday – Thursday from 6:30 am – 9:00 am June 8th – July 3rd. In the month of July there will be no practices. Practice will then start up again, Monday-Friday beginning August 3rd until school begins.
  • Cheerleading class will be held during 5th period on B Days on the
    block schedule. Class time will be from 6:00 AM – 9:20 AM, in less
    notified otherwise.
  • Safety Clinic
  • Summer training camp
  • Team Fundraisers
  • Competition practices and competition dates
  • Games
  • On game days, cheerleaders must attend a FULL day of school and
    will not be allowed to check in or out. They will only be excused if
    they attend a school excused activity, or have a doctor’s appointment that has been excused before hand and a doctor’s note.
  • formances in school assemblies

If any other activities or opportunities are chosen by the coach, the coach will decide if the event is mandatory or optional. Reasonable notice of all such activities/opportunities will be given for mandatory events, and as early as possible for others.

Financial commitment
Members are responsible for the following approximate costs for the 2009-2010 school year. Fundraising opportunities will be available to help bring down the financial costs.

    August 7th $200.00
    September 1st Balance

    All payments are to be made to the JHS Main Office – cheer account. Cheerleaders will not receive their uniform if they are deficient on payments. NO REFUND if cheerleader quits or is dismissed from the squad.

Fundraising Activities
Squad members will participate in fundraising activities to provide for the overall cost. A parent fundraising committee will be established to assist in the following but not limited to

  • Car Wash (mandatory for all)
  • Yard sale
  • Homecoming (mandatory for all)
  • Mini Cheer Clinic (mandatory for all)
  • Cookie dough Sale

Parent Involvement
Parents are encouraged to be involved and assist in activities, games, etc… A parent fundraising Committee will be established to head up all fundraising activities. Parents ordering gifts, refreshments etc. for squad need pre-approval for reimbursement or will be financially responsible for cost.


Uniform & Practice Wear

  • Hair must be pulled back and out of face
  • For safety reason jewelry or watches will no be worn a practices and games. Fingernails must be kept sort and no gum will be allowed during practice or games, if so demerits will be given
  • Cheerleaders must wear the appropriate practice outfit that are assigned for that specific practice.

Competition
Squad members, in addition to providing school spirit at school will be given the opportunity to participate in learning, practicing in competition. All Varsity Cheerleaders will be given the choice if wanting a position on the JHS competition squad. As for JV, Cheerleaders will be given the chance to tryout for a limited amount of open spots on the JHS Competition squad. Nationals will be determined by qualification and budget.

Tryout Procedure
Tryouts will be held each year prior to the start of Jordan High Cheerleading training. Tryouts may additionally be conducted at other times at the discretion of the coach. The format of the tryouts will be decided by the coach and will be held in a fair manner conductive to allowing each candidate to show her best abilities and potential. Individuals who have been on the cheer squad during a pervious year, are not guaranteed a spot the next school year. Tryouts will be closed and independent judges will select the squad. The following are needed for each student prior to trying out:

  • Attend all tryout clinics
  • Attend mandatory parent meeting with parent or guardian (sign registration
    sheet provided)
  • 3.0 GPA 3rd quarter or 3.0 cumulative

The following paper work must be turned in the first day of clinic by 3:15 PM and PAPER CLIPPED in this order:

  • Information sheet
  • An official copy of 3rd quarter grades with a 3.0 GPA or cumulative or a printout from the school registar (this will not be returned)
  • Consent form signed by parent or guardian
  • Medical Insurance Information and Release form
  • Two recommendation forms from teachers in s sealed envelop. One form should be filled out by a coach or dance teacher, if able.

Disciplinary Action
Disciplinary action will only be invoked as a last resort. Every reasonable attempt will be made to avoid situation likely to lead to such action through squad discussion and positive encouragement by finding ways and means to correct negative trends. Each case of discipline will be judged individually. The coach, with the school administration, has the final decision in any discipline situation.

Demerit system
A Demerit System will be used to determine class grade and cheer participation. Coach establishes the right to give demerits not mentioned if a discipline action is required. Grades will be based on a number of demerits given by the end of the quarter. Squad members will have the opportunity to make up ALL demerits. On game day, squad members will not cheer if accumulate demerit points position them at 6 or higher.

0-5 Demerits A
6 Demerits B
7 Demerits C
8 Demerits D
9 Demerits or more F

Demerit Point System
Demerits will be given accordingly, but not limited to:

Attendance / Tardies
  • Tardiness 1-10 minutes to practice - 1 Demerit
  • Tardiness 10-30 minutes to practice - 2 Demerits
  • Excused absent from practice - 1 Demerit
  • Unexcused absent from practice - 3 Demerits
  • Tardiness 1-10 minutes to game - 2 Demerits
  • Tardiness 10-30 minutes to game - 3 Demerits
  • Excused absent from game - 1 Demerit
  • Unexcused absent from game - 5 Demerits
Uniform / Appearance
  • Not wearing uniform when required - 1 Demerit
  • Part of uniform missing or untidy - 1 Demerit
  • Not wearing hair back for games / practice - 1 Demerit
  • Gum - 1 Demerit
  • Jewelry - 1 Demerit
Conduct
  • Talking or being disruptive in practice or game - 1 Demerit
  • Lack of effort - 1 Demerit
  • Not cooperating with coach, caption(s) - 2 Demerits
  • Disrespect to teammates and/or coaches - 2 Demerits
  • Suspended from school 1st offense - 5 Demerits / probation
  • Suspended from school 2nd offense - Termination

    All demerits can be made up by running a half of mile for each demerit given. There is no limit to the number of demerits that can be made up. They will be given the opportunity to run off demerits the 1st Saturday of each month, or if they arrange a time to meet with a coach outside of the given dates.
